Mark Holden: 'The "Essence" of Home and Travels'

Mark Holden’s latest solo exhibition ‘The “Essence” of Home and Travels’ features a collection of fresh artworks inspired by the views of St Andrews, as well as travels in Italy, Morocco and Spain. The show comprises both painting and photography. It thematically creates a contrast between at home and abroad, that the diversity of media highlights.

The collection covers an eclectic range of styles, including Fauvism, abstraction, and the artist’s more familiar Colourism and Impressionism. With regards to the collection of photographs, Mark has included ICM (‘intended camera movement’), black-and-white and colour to depict a range of travel subjects.

Mark Holden is a Scottish-based artist working predominantly in oils and watercolours. After a career in sales and marketing, Mark was fortunate to be able to follow his interest in painting and begin his professional career in 2002. In his work he focuses mostly on landscapes, while also painting classic cars, ski imagery and still life. Mark is mostly known for his evocative, impressionistic paintings that capture the essence of St Andrews. He complements his individual practice by teaching art on cruises and art-themed tours.

“Travel broadens our creative observation possibilities and allows us to create imagery that is then translated into compositions, telling stories.”
